When Is Lychee Season in Australia?

If you love fresh lychees, summer is the time to look forward to.

Australian lychee season generally runs from mid-October through to late March, with peak availability during December and January.

In fact, Australia has the longest lychee production season in the world.

That's possible because lychees are grown across a long stretch of Australia's east coast, from tropical Far North Queensland through Central and South East Queensland and into Northern New South Wales.

The season begins in the north, where the first Australian lychees are usually harvested from around mid to late October. As summer progresses, harvest moves through the different growing regions, with the latest fruit coming from Northern New South Wales towards the end of the season.

When are Lush Lychees in season?

At Lush Lychees, our orchard is located near Rockhampton in Central Queensland, right in the middle of Australia's lychee-growing regions.

Our harvest typically takes place across December and January, right around the peak of the Australian season.

Exactly when we start picking can vary from year to year. Lychees are a seasonal crop, so weather, flowering and how the fruit develops all play a part in determining when harvest begins.

We don't choose the date, the fruit does.

What is the best time to buy Australian lychees?

If you're looking for fresh Australian lychees, December and January are generally the best months for availability, when growers across a number of regions are harvesting.

It's also why lychees have become such a familiar part of an Australian summer, showing up just in time for Christmas, holidays and long summer days.

Fresh lychee season doesn't last forever, which is part of what makes it so special.

For most of the year, we work towards those few weeks when the orchard is ready to harvest. Then, before we know it, the picking starts and another lychee season is underway.

Fresh Lush Lychees are available for a limited time each summer.
